Occidental is more than just a bar—it’s a vibrant local hub nestled in Denver’s lively neighborhood at 1950 W 32nd Ave. This spot perfectly captures the essence of a down-to-earth dive bar with a welcoming vibe that instantly makes you feel at home. Whether you're a sports fan craving a spot to watch a New York or New Jersey team, a late-night food seeker, or someone simply looking to enjoy expertly crafted cocktails in a chill atmosphere, Occidental hits all the right notes.
What really sets Occidental apart is its delicious, no-fuss menu that complements the well-curated drink selection. From their crispy, golden Chicken Tenders and comforting Green Chile Mac & Cheese to crowd-pleasers like Deviled Eggs and the irresistible Chicken Shawarma Tots, the food is thoughtfully designed for sharing and satisfying cravings. Sandwich lovers will appreciate options like the classic Cheeseburger or the Serrano Flatbread Sandwich paired delightfully with manchego cheese chips. Flavorful standout dishes like the Kimchi Fries and their signature Cold Crab Dip show a bold creativity that doesn’t come at the expense of comfort.
The drink menu is equally impressive and diverse, featuring stellar cocktails such as the smoky El Diablo and classic Manhattans, alongside well-executed staples like Mimosas and crisp Cerveza Imperial. Drinks are reasonably priced, making each visit feel like an inviting occasion rather than a splurge.
Visitors frequently rave about the fun and laidback atmosphere that encourages genuine connections and laughter. The back patio offers a perfect retreat for group hangouts or casual dates, expanding the space beyond the cozy front bar to accommodate those long evenings of socializing. The staff, led by friendly and attentive bartenders like Jason and David, bring warmth and a local credibility that only enriches the overall experience.
Real guests describe Occidental as a neighborhood gem where “the energy is great, and the vibe is even better,” offering a balance of excellent food, fantastic cocktails, and a welcoming setting “filled with locals” and zero pretension. The kitchen stays open until close, making late-night hunger pangs easily curbed without losing any quality or atmosphere. If you’re craving a spirited spot where the food beats expectations and each visit feels like catching up with old friends, Occidental should head straight to your must-visit list in Denver.
I recently visited Occidental, a dive bar that had a pretty good vibe and decent food. The atmosphere was laid-back, making it a nice spot to unwind with friends. The drinks were reasonably priced, and the menu offered a variety of tasty options that hit the spot. Overall, I enjoyed the casual feel of the place and the quality of the food. However, the service left something to be desired. It took a while for our server to take our order, and we often found ourselves waiting too long for refills and check-ins. While the staff seemed friendly enough, they appeared overwhelmed and distracted, which made the experience less enjoyable. If Occidental can improve its service, it would definitely elevate the overall experience, as the bar has a lot of potential.
Great Bar was pretty solid bar food. The staff is always really nice and the crowd is always pretty chill. Great for a late night move if you need a drink or something to eat because the kitchen is open until they close.
Fun little spot with some of the best cocktail flavor combinations in the city. The place to make you feel at home if you’re from NY or NJ! Highly suggest coming in to watch your favorite NY sports teams play, grab a chopped cheese and enjoy some laughs. The food is better than expected. This video shows the front area of the bar, but there is more seating on the back patio area. 2023: Pictured here are the Calling All Skeletons and Whatever Didi Wants. Both were mixed to perfection and came out quickly. We also got the Cold Crab Dip and DANGGG - I highly recommend you do too! The shrimp chips and cucumber are great as dipping items. Our server was really sociable and had us laughing a bunch. I wish I had room for dessert, but it’s just giving me another reason to come back
The food is amazing, the atmosphere is fun, the service is wonderful, and the drinks are delicious. It’s one of our new favorite must stop spots in Denver! Fun for a quick drink, date night, or any afternoon/evening outing.
We had Occidental on our Denver list with three exclamation marks next to it but couldn’t remember why… now we know! We ended up going every single day of our trip. It’s that good. This is the kind of place that feels like a true neighborhood bar—filled with locals, great energy, and zero pretension. The drinks are spot on, and the vibe is even better. Huge shoutout to Jason and David behind the bar—they kept us laughing the whole time with their fun jokes and made us feel like regulars right away. If you want a place that feels authentic, welcoming, and just plain fun, Occidental is it. Definitely deserving of those three exclamation marks!!!
Be still my heart. Occidental is a glorious dive into the wreckage of rock n’ roll soul—like finding Lou Reed’s leather jacket in a pool of mezcal. The bartenders pour loud, fast, and just shy of illegal. It’s the kind of joint that makes you believe in the church of bad decisions and better cocktails. Don’t miss the wall signed by legends.
